Bertica García Dubus was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She began her art studies at Saint Dominic College, in St. Charles, Illinois, where she received her B.A. degree in Fine Arts. There, she immersed herself in many techniques and mediums, but was most attracted to the Classical/Realistic style of oil painting, which she has continued to explore and personalize.
Through art she has discovered that the ability to see light and shadow, and recognize beauty in the simplest object, not only leads to joy, but provides an invaluable learning tool. Bertica considers herself blessed to have had the opportunity to develop a trained eye and hopes that through her work, others will come to see and appreciate the beauty of creation.
Over the course of her career, Ms. García Dubus has participated in exhibitions in the United States and in the Dominican Republic. On three separate occasions her works won awards at the Bienal E. León Jiménes in Santiago, Dominican Republic — perhaps that country’s most prestigious juried art exposition. Critics in the United States have described her style as realistic in nature, and her paintings as figurative works that tell a story with warmth and feeling. Since moving to Phoenix in 1985, Bertica has turned her eye for detail, color and design to good use, as a graphic artist and illustrator, both on staff at advertising agencies and presently on her own.
In the fall of 2007, Bertica was the Artist in Residence at The Artist’s Studio at The Farm, in Phoenix. She titled the show “Bertica’s Back,” implying her return to the easel. It showcased a series of people seen from the back. In December of 2008, she exhibited at Galería Viota, in San Juan, Puerto Rico; in May of 2009, she inaugurated an individual exhibit consisting of 35 pieces in Santo Domingo, titled “Nature Ignited.” In 2010, exhibitions in Arizona included: Quiessence Restaurant
in Phoenix; Xico, Inc. in Chandler; Tempe Public Library (Connections Café), and Off Madison Ave.,
in Tempe.
Previously, she was the solo artist exhibiting at Northern Trust Bank, in Scottsdale, Arizona. she will be joining other Dominican artists in a collective show in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
