Asia 2011 - Photographs/Installation by Larry Cwik

"Asia 2011" is Portland artist and photographer Larry Cwik's current exhibit of new work at Gallery 5, his first solo exhibit in Portland in almost four years.  The exhibit and installation address commerce and spirituality in Asia and include Cwik's color photographs from the Asia 2011 project from Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and Qatar. The installation component of the exhibit includes symbolic representations of spirituality, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, the three largest spiritual belief systems in Asia, contrasted like yin yang with an installation element about commerce, a video representation of advertising/commerce in Asia in the form of a 14.5 minute video loop of 19 Asian television commercials compiled by Cwik.  The photographic images are all from 2011 and have never been exhibited before.  They reflect the diversity of cultures, trends, demographics, commerce, and spirituality in a continent that is home to 60% of people on earth, a continent that is increasingly important in world affairs and geopolitically.  The artist will do a free talk at the gallery, open to the public, on First Friday, February 3, 2012, from 7 - 8 pm.

 Biography
Larry Cwik has shown his work since 1983 in exhibits in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Asia and is represented in the collections of the Portland Art Museum, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Paris, Bank of America, and other collections.  He has received numerous awards including a Portland Photographers Forum Award.   His work has been published in Northwest Magazine, Impulse Magazine, La Fotografia, Barcelona, and was featured in June 2011 in La Lettre de la Photographie, Paris.  Artist page: www.larrycwik.com ; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Larry-Cwik-Photographic-Fine-Art/230113190400324
